How to make a great Fish Batter

Make your own Fish and Chips and show off your skills with this easy to follow Fish Batter. Discover the secret to make a crispy, light, golden fish batter at home. Also can be used on calamari and onion rings. It’s easier than you think.


1 cup Self Raising Flour

1 cup (250ml) Soda Water

1/2 tsp Salt

1000ml Vegetable Oil

1kg Blue Eye Trevalla Fish Fillets halved


Step 1

In a bowl combine flour and salt. Make a well in the centre.

Step 2

Gradually add soda water, using a whisk to stir.

Step 2
Add oil to large saucepan. Heat over medium heat to 180 degrees.
Step 3
Dip pieces of fish, one at a time, into batter to evenly coat and deep-fry for 3-4 minutes or until crisp and golden.
Step 4
Transfer to a plate lined and repeat reheating the oil between batches.
